The new exhibition of master of fashion photography Gian Paolo Barbieri

In tribute to the maestro who left an indelible mark on contemporary fashion photography, House of Lucie Ostuni and The Lucie Awards present “Gian Paolo Barbieri: Beyond Fashion.” This retrospective exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation and 29 Arts In Progress Gallery in Milan, will be open to the public from July 5th to August 31st, 2024.

The exhibition showcases many of Barbieri’s iconic works alongside previously unseen photographs from the 1960s to 2000, unearthed through meticulous research in the artist’s archive. Gian Paolo Barbieri offered a novel perspective on Italian fashion that was unprecedented, establishing himself as a confidant and collaborator with designers who became central figures in the “Made in Italy” movement, reshaping the landscape of fashion and style. Through his lens, Barbieri captured the essence of this renaissance, creating timeless images.

The exhibition features intimate and candid portraits of models and celebrities such as Veruschka, Naomi Campbell, Marpessa, Eva Herzigova, Monica Bellucci, Mina, and Isabella Rossellini. These are juxtaposed with iconic photographs, including the famed shot of Audrey Hepburn from 1969, created for some of the most legendary campaigns for brands like Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and Armani.

The narrative of the exhibition also unveils Barbieri’s innovative approach to set design and styling, showcasing his unmistakable genius. His photography is both ironic and erudite, rich in art historical references, featuring eclectic outdoor settings in exotic locations and cinematic influences from his early work at Cinecittà in Rome. For Barbieri, fashion without art is stripped bare and devoid of meaning.

The women in Barbieri’s photographs break free from the conventional poses of fashion photography, embodying a new, unconventional elegance that reveals a more relaxed and sensual side. Barbieri, who was awarded the Lucie Award for Best International Fashion Photographer (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion) in 2018, is celebrated for his meticulous use of lighting, his deep understanding of cinema and theater, and the poised stillness of his subjects.

Gian Paolo Barbieri’s work captivates, astonishes, and profoundly moves the viewer, achieving what is at the heart of photography and art itself.
