1997: avant-garde meets luxury at Hermès. The designer is Martin Margiela, famous for his creations and his proverbial elusiveness, founder of the eponymous brand and Hermès creative director till 2003.After eight years since the departure from his brand and the fashion world, Antwerp’s MoMu celebrates his collaboration with the french luxury brand with an exhibition “Margiela – Hermès Years”.The seventh member of the “Antwerp Six”, has revolutionized the fashion world with his unique iconoclast and conceptual approach to design and its comunication.
Margiela has been the first designer to work with recycled fabrics in order to “give them another life” creating garments of such impeccable tayloring and craftsmanship that granted Maison Martin Margiela, an invitation to show the Artisanal line during Haute Couture week.
True to the Hermès tradition, he has created elegant, timeless yet collections. From october 1997, when Hermès CEO Jean Louis Dumas appointed him creative director of the brand, Margiela has worked a perfect balance between the legacy of Hermès and his highly innovative style, defined “deconstructionism”by fashion critics.
In the “heart of the Belgian fashion”, a short walk from the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts ( where Margiela graduated in 1980) and the Flanders Fashion Institute (FFI), the MoMu – Mode Museum Antwerp celebrates the history and creations until 27 August 2017.
