Material experimentation, Funghi, and Collectivism: a look inside PLĀS latest collection

Words TOMMASO FALOCI

PLĀS has accustomed us since the beginning to experiencing their collections in a different and unconventional way. Aiming to redefine the traditional fashion show by creating a more dynamic and engaging experience for viewers through the fusion of fashion and performance, today PLĀS is set to present “Mycelia”, their last collection, with a multi-sensory event at Via Mestre 10, east of Milan.

Inspired by the diverse and resilient world of fungi, this collection explores the intricate beauty of fungal forms, textures, and their crucial role in ecosystems. Just as fungi thrive in various environments and connect through underground networks, PLĀS envisions its international community of creatives as similarly interconnected, innovative, and adaptable.

Each piece showcases artisanal knitting techniques and innovative fabrics, including materials derived from mushrooms, developed in collaboration with specialized mushroom farms. The intricate designs not only reflect the textures and forms of fungi but also embody the brand’s dedication to sustainable and ethical craftsmanship, from the choice of materials to the selection of carefully chosen producers.

Collaborators include the Paris-based experimental design and material research studio Aléa and visual artist Gian Marco Porru, along with many others who have joined forces with the young brand to bring “Mycelia” to life.

For this presentation, Aléa has designed a mesmerizing scenography that weaves together elements of design, art, and biology into a cohesive immersive experience. The installation creatively explores the degradation of dyes by fungi, showcasing textiles transformed by decaying mycelium. Choreographing the movement of the models will be visual artist Gian Marco Porru, adding a dynamic layer to the event, while Jason White contributes his expert insights and displays on fermentation, enriching the project with his specialized knowledge.

Deeply committed to sustainable and ethical craftsmanship, PLĀS, not only as a brand but also as a movement,  works closely with Italian knitwear and textile artisans to develop innovative, eco-conscious solutions. The brand emphasizes transparency throughout its production process, ensuring each piece is crafted with care using responsibly sourced materials and techniques that respect both the environment and the artisans involved.

With a focus on continuous innovation, PLĀS releases two thoughtfully curated collections each year, alongside mid-season ‘Buy-Now Wear-Now’ exclusive product drops that offer consumers immediate access to limited-edition items. By doing so, the brand is carving out its own unique path in an increasingly competitive market, distinguishing itself not only through its unique designs but also through its unwavering commitment to creativity, sustainability, and collectivism. This holistic approach reflects PLĀS’ belief that fashion can be both innovative and responsible, fostering a global community of creatives and consumers who share these values.
