Loved by generations of aficionados thanks to its practical and unpretentious mode, easy to get it into a pocket without fear of finding it wrinkled, in contemporary history the bucket hat has always gone with fashion back and forth.
Born in Ireland in the early 1900s as a rain hat for workers and sportsmen, rediscovered in the 60s with the Mods style, revamped in the 80s with the eclectic taste of American rappers and subsequently with the 90s street culture, the bucket hat is experiencing a fourth, resplendent youth between celebs and catwalks.
At Dior Fall/Winter 19 fashion show, it is the protagonist: in felt or varnish, well pulled down on the head with the wing at the edge of the eyebrows, the bucket hat admirably completes the Teddy Girl look that pervades the collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, revealing itself as a strategic element also in terms of make-up. Hence the question: how to make up preventing the brim’s shadow eclipsing the eye? Indeed, how to enhance the gaze with the hat?
“With a strong personality design. I was inspired by the early British avant-garde of the 60s, by the girls of swinging London and by their passion for a definitely rock graphic make-up,” says Peter Philips, creative director of Christian Dior make-up, “I reinterpreted it by dramatizing the contrast between dark eyes and light lips, a bit like a punk doll”.
