MAY 20, 2020 “ISTMO” IS ON CHILI – THE DIRECTOR CARLO FENIZI TELLS US THE (BEFORE CORONAVIRUS) STORY OF A MAN IN SELF-IMPOSED QUARANTINE

Interview by Fiammetta Cesana

(Below in Italian)

A man lives stuck within the walls of his home, prisoner of routine, smart working and of his own delusions, victim of a tumultuous generational gap and of a slowness in contrast with the outside world, relentlessly mobile and fast… Does it reminds you of anything?
Yet the story of Orlando, translator and influencer, still takes place in unsuspected times…

Directed by the young filmmaker Carlo Fenizi, “Istmo” is on demand on the Chili streaming platform from 20 May. The international cast see as protagonist Michele Venitucci – of “Tutto l’amore che c’è” and “A Woman” – who also signs the screenplay together with Carlo, Caterina Shulha, Timothy Martin, and Antonia San Juan, award-winning Spanish star of “Todo sober mi madre” by Almodóvar as well as a great source of inspiration and teaching for Carlo.

Fiammetta: Dear Carlo, in the light of the release of your new movie, “Istmo”, the first question that inevitably arises on me is: would you ever said that your plot’d have become reality for all of us? A man, Orlando, a inmate of his home but above all of himself, becomes an isthmus, just like all of us today, which in two months have turned ourselves into increasingly tight land-bridges, connecting two worlds that now seem to have nothing with one another: us and “reality”. Would you ever have said that?

Carlo Fenizi: Certainly I’d have never said that. The film was born in unsuspected times and suddenly became a mirror of a global and current condition. Orlando’s imprisonment is not due to external causes, it is a self-imprisonment. The film reflects on the isolation of a communication, that of social networks, less and less in connection with real life and with the beauty of living fully the authenticity of relationships. It is not, however, a demonization, but only a glance. In the situation we live and have experienced these days, there is certainly an unexpected synchrony. Orlando’s daily life, made up of home self-sufficient rites, has suddenly overwhelmed us. A reality which I presented as hyperbolic and that has become commonly recognized as familiar in this state of emergency: work and gym at home, video calls, food deliveries, difficult cohabitations, etc. In a overall, positive and new rethinking of relationships, the film today can perhaps raise a certain empathy.

Your work has definitely been providential!
Is so the name of the protagonist, Orlando, a tribute to Ariosto’s paladin? Will he also reach madness because of the betrayal of a beautiful Angelica?

My Orlando does not reach madness, he fears it or lives it without realizing it, he is betrayed by himself because of the inability of living fully, constantly in conflict with the past. Ariosto’s Orlando is a character of the Renaissance epic, and like that of the film, he is a victim of passions and a reflection of human fragility, made up of the illusion of high-flying and harsh awareness. A beautiful Angelica, however, is there: her name is Marina and she is a rider.

Let’s move on to you: when did you realize you would a director? Who are your teachers?

From my memory, I always wanted to be a director. I was very young and I already knew what my path was. The idea of shaping reality to my will, creating infinite other possible realities, fascinated me tremendously. Christmas toys were never used for the original purpose. Castles, forts, trains were movie sets on the floor of my bedroom that turned into a Cinecittà miniature. As a teenager I convinced my classmates to stage plays written by me or to experiment with the video camera. About my teachers: I wish I could have them in flesh and bone! I landed in Rome with the armored sets. I experienced the lessons of my teachers as a spectator. Master-magicians of incredible realities: Fellini, Buñuel, Almodóvar, Burton.

What do you think of today’s productions? Do you share the “bulimic” passion for series? Are you or not a binge-watcher?

Today’s productions are many, varied and well made, you can create any type of reality imaginable, but above all there is a free explosion of ideas and stories. As a spectator I don’t like series, I get bored and impatient easily, this doesn’t mean that I’d not like to shoot one, also because, surprisingly, I came to the idea that the world of digital platforms is able to loosen a bit the closed and difficult circuit of cinema in the traditional sense, showing an alternative panorama and offering more possibilities to productions and spectators. Nonetheless, the ideal for me, precisely against the bulimic passions you mention, would be to bring together the cinema system with that of the platforms. It’d be nice to make traditional cinema more sustainable as a place and a medium, as a collective ritual of the big screen with its unbeatable power and atmosphere, and to be able to open it to diversified products offering more voices and gazes.

You’re right. In fact, it is thanks to the existence and sustainability of these platforms that we will be able to enjoy the premiere of you movie in quarantine! Though I imagine the disappointment for not being able to see it at the cinema… How are you going through this unexpected retreat? Is insulation a harbinger of new projects?

The isolation was a little melancholy, but only in some emotional aspects. By my nature I don’t feel loneliness and in the end it turned out to a very productive period. From the desperation of the cancellation of the film at the cinema, to the relief for its release on the platforms. I have several new projects, one is taking shape more than the others, perhaps at the antipodes of Istmo. It will already be the sign of a new phase.

How much is there, if any, of Carlo in Orlando?

Orlando is a translator from Spanish. So in him of me there is a crazy passion for Hispanic language and culture. It is part of my university and cultural education, as well as film and life. It is a kind of predestination for me. The whole film is littered with Hispanic references. Unlike Orlando, I find it hard to get passionate about social networks (I use them but for a sort of sense of duty) and I love the outside world, in all its exciting danger.

The trailer omits spoilers about the character played by the Spanish star Antonia San Juan. Can you give us some clues?

Antonia (whose name coincides with that of the actress) is Orlando’s employer. They communicate through video calls. However, her role has an unexpected existential twist for the protagonist and represents a paradox in his condition. Antonia, actress, is capable of offering an immense range of expressive possibilities. Her charm is impressive. For me she was an educational experience and a gift of life: from a human point of view, having met her and, professionally, being able to direct her.

A few nights ago on the Tv news, the actor Claudio Amendola, rigorously live from his living room, highlighted the dramatic consequences that the lockdown is having on the filmography’s workers. What do you think the future of the industry will be?

Quarantine has certainly been and continues to be a drama for the entertainment industry in general, but I want to be optimistic. With the hope that things will resume their normal operations as soon as possible, I believe that this reprogramming of the world will revolutionize cinema, restore some stale dynamics and, perhaps, reconsider some order and awareness, especially equal opportunities. There is and there will be a price to pay, but that’s the cause and effect of every revolution and change.

Carlo Fenizi: No, certamente non l’avrei mai detto.
